How to get to Varenna...
Varenna is situated approximately 65 km north of Milan, located on the eastern leg of Lake Como.
Arriving by Train
If you are based in Milan we highly recommend that you use the economical and usually punctual train service run by Trenitalia.
Trains leave on the hour from both "Milano Centrale" and "Milano Porta Garibaldi". The trains leaving from "Milano Centrale" will have destination "Sondrio" or "Tirano". The trip to "Varenna-Esino" takes approximately 50 mins from "Milano Centrale" and 75 mins from "Milano Porta Garibaldi".
Important, there are two train options from "Milano Porta Garibaldi", do not take the option, which has duration of 1:59 ...it takes the "long way around".
Tickets can be bought directly in the station at the vending machines.
Arriving by Car
Varenna is pretty well sign posted, the main road which runs from Milan is the SS36. It's a dual carriageway which will bring you all the way to SONDRIO - VALTELLINA. Exit the SS36 when you see MANDELLO DEL LARIO - ABBADIA LARIANA - VARENNA. Continue for approx. 15 km along the road that runs along the lake until you reach the exit for Varenna, on the left.
We'd recommend parking at the train station where parking meters can be easily found (make sure you have change).
